ms Zaandam

4.4/5 |

The musically themed ms Zaandam offers a unique shipboard atmosphere. Her décor includes artifacts and memorabilia representing various musical genres - from a Baroque-style Dutch pipe organ in the atrium to guitars signed by rock icons The Rolling Stones. Of course, guests enjoy Holland America's signature offerings, such as world-class cuisine in the Rotterdam Dining Room, which spans two decks and features Rosenthal china, starched linens, silver and fresh flowers.

  • Special Dietary Needs - Advance Notice Required -

Special dietary requests, such as vegetarian, diabetic or gluten-free meals, are easily accommodated with advance notice. Kosher meals and a Health Conscious Dining option are also available. To arrange special meals, please contact the Ship Services Department at 1-800-541-1576 at least 90 days prior to departure.

    Food Allergies

For guests with food intolerances or allergies that are NOT life-threatening, please contact the Ship Services Department at (800)541-1576.

For guests with life-threatening food allergies, guests are asked to provide detailed information to the Access & Compliance Department by completing a Special Requirements Information (SRI) Form. Guests should indicate on this form which foods may potentially cause a severe reaction. Guests with a variety of severe food allergies sail with Holland America Line regularly. The galley staff on board is accustomed to and experienced in dealing with these types of needs. The galley itself has many different areas of food preparation, which can help reduce the possibility of cross-contamination. It is important to note, however, that meals are prepared in mass quantities on board, thus there is always the possibility of some cross-contamination. As such, Holland America Line cannot guarantee that a guest will not come in contact with those items. Although the Access & Compliance Department will provide the ship with an advance notice of all food allergies detailed on an SRI submitted to them, it is recommended that guests also contact the Dining Room Manager upon boarding to review the details of these special dietary needs.

  • Medical Emergencies -

If passengers become ill or injured during the voyage and the diagnostic and/or care needs exceed the capabilities of the infirmary, passengers will be transferred to medical facilities ashore.

Please note: Medicare and many health insurance plans DO NOT cover the cost of medical care at sea, in foreign countries, or for air evacuation. Guests are encouraged to obtain travel medical insurance prior to travel in order to be reimbursed for services rendered.

  • Pregnancy Policy -

Women cannot have begun their 24th week of pregnancy at any time before or during the cruise.

If you are pregnant, a physician

  • Smoking Policy -

For the comfort of all guests, smoking is prohibited in all staterooms, showrooms, and most other indoor areas. While smoking is not permitted in staterooms, guests are allowed to smoke on stateroom verandahs. Smoking is also permitted on certain other designated, outside decks. The designated smoking areas for all ships are as follows unless otherwise noted.

    • Stateroom verandahs
    • Casino (Active players only)
    • Seaview Bar
    • Outside Decks
    • Sports Deck

Cigar and pipe smoking is NOT allowed anywhere inside the ship; it is only permitted on the outside decks where smoking is allowed and on stateroom verandahs.

Electronic cigarettes are permitted in staterooms but not in other public areas of the ship other than on outside decks designated as smoking areas.

Any guest caught smoking inside their stateroom will be considered in violation of Holland America's smoking policy, and will be charged a US$250 cleaning fee per day of violation.

  • Wheelchair Access & Special Needs -

Holland America Line is committed to providing safe, easy, and accessible accommodations for all persons with disabilities, to the extent that is feasible. However, some needs require adequate time to prepare for a guest's arrival. It is recommended that guests make every effort to contact the Access & Compliance Department and submit a Special Requirements Information (SRI) Form well in advance of the departure of their cruise and/or cruisetour. It is recommended that an SRI form be submitted immediately upon booking, or a minimum of 45 days prior to departure.

Guests who are unable to care for their basic needs (e.g. dressing, eating, and attending safety drills) MUST have a capable traveling companion. The medical staff on board is not available for daily care unless an individual is hospitalized in the ship's Medical Center. In limited situations (either on board or ashore), Holland America may find it necessary to ask the individual to make alternative travel arrangements, such as if an individual with a disability is unable to satisfy certain specified safety and other criteria, even when provided with appropriate auxiliary aids and services.

    Wheelchair-Accessible Staterooms

Holland America Line vessels have specially designed staterooms for guests who use wheelchairs. If you have not booked a wheelchair accessible staterooms, but instead will be using a standard stateroom, it is important to know about some limitations that adversely impact maneuverability, especially ingress and egress into bathrooms. For example, bathroom dimensions, doorsills, and the height of bathtubs in standard staterooms are often difficult to negotiate for guests who have limited mobility. Additionally, standard stateroom doors and hallways may be too narrow for a wheelchair or scooter* to maneuver into and out of the stateroom.

*Note: For safety reasons, these mobility devices must be stored and charged in the guests' staterooms.

Wheelchair Accessible Staterooms offer features such as wider entry doors, roll-in showers with grab bars and benches/seats, and hand-held shower nozzles, as well as lowered closet and towel rods.

    • Wheelchair accessible stateroom entry doors measure 32 inches wide.
    • Wheelchair accessible bathroom doors measure 32 inches wide.

Accessible stateroom locations are noted on the Deck Plans for each ship.

    Ship Transfer Options

For individuals with limited mobility, the use of a wheelchair will be the primary mobility assistance aid for getting on and off the ship. Certain ship transfer operations (i.e. during tendering and at the gangways) may not be fully accessible to wheelchairs or scooters. When a ship is unable to dock, guests are taken ashore on smaller boats called tenders. Some guests with limited mobility may find it difficult to embark or disembark the ship at certain times while tendering or while docked due to steep gangways and steps, particularly during low or high tide. Also, please note that scooters and wheelchairs which are more than 100 lbs. (without the battery) are not allowed to be transferred from the ship to tender and/or from tender to shore.

Most Holland America Line vessels have been retrofitted with a tender-lift system that enables guests to roll directly on and off tenders while remaining in their wheelchairs. However, please be advised that adverse weather conditions such as wind, swells, or extreme tide levels may prohibit the use of the ship's tender lift equipment. Additionally, some port facilities may not be able to accommodate the lift equipment. If you require the use of this equipment, please speak with the Guest Relations Manager upon embarkation for further details or to coordinate specific arrangements.

Situations may occur in which guests with limited mobility may not be able to go ashore at the time they desire or are unable to go ashore at all in certain ports. For the safety of all concerned, the Captain shall make the final determination regarding whether or not it is advisable to provide assistance to guests with mobility impairments, or to carry their mobility assistance device (wheelchair, scooter, walker, etc.), taking into account all appropriate matters including, but not limited to, weather conditions, ship's location, weight of the guest or their mobility device, etc.

    Personal Mobility Equipment

For the safety of all guests and crew, and to enhance accessibility, Holland America Line strongly recommends that all personal electric mobility equipment meet the following criteria:

    • Width: 23" maximum (in order to be accommodated in a standard stateroom), unless collapsible to a width of 23" or less
    • Weight: 100 lbs. maximum (without battery)
    • Batteries: Must be gel or dry cell or AGM (Absorbed Glass Mat) only

Holland America Line recognizes that for some people, a larger scooter may be essential. If you believe you need a larger scooter, please contact the Access & Compliance Department to discuss your requirements.

For the safety of all guests and crew, scooters and other mobility equipment need to be securely stored and charged in the guest's stateroom, not in hallways or elevator lobbies. Scooters left in hallways and elevator lobbies could restrict people needing to travel through these areas in an emergency, particularly other guests using mobility aids, since they would have no way of getting by a scooter left in a hallway.

Holland America Line is no longer able to provide complimentary wheelchair assistance for any purpose other than embarkation, disembarkation, and emergency situations. Holland America Line wheelchairs are not available for shore excursions or for use on board. If you will require regular use of a wheelchair, it is recommended that you bring your own wheelchair with you. You may also make advance rental arrangements prior to your sailing and have a wheelchair delivered directly to the ship for use on board and in ports of call.

Special Needs at Sea and CareVacations/CruiseShipAssist are the vendors that Holland America Line has approved for delivery of mobility devices. Please contact these vendors directly for pricing and availability.

Please be advised that all pre-arranged mobility equipment rentals must be made by the guest and the third party provider. Consequently, you assume the entire risk of utilizing these third party services subject only to whatever terms or arrangements are made by you or on your behalf with the service provider. Refund issues must be dealt with solely between you and the service provider. We recommend contacting one of these companies to confirm your arrangements as soon as possible in order to ensure the availability of your specific requests.

    Shoreside Wheelchair Assistance

Because facilities in ports around the world vary significantly, wheelchair accommodations may not be available for some land tours and/or shore excursions. Furthermore, many transportation vehicles around the world do not have wheelchair lifts. Thus, it may be necessary for Holland America Line to make alternate transportation arrangements such as a sedan vehicle. This requires that a guest who uses a wheelchair be able to transfer from his/her wheelchair to the front or back seat of a sedan. Due to the limited number of lift-equipped vehicles in foreign locations, guests may incur additional costs for transportation related to airport transfers, shore excursions, and tour/hotel packages. Please note, lift equipped transportation within the United States may be arranged without additional costs. For information on alternative transportation arrangements and associated costs please contact the Access & Compliance Department . Please advise Holland America Line as far in advance as possible of any special needs for transfers. This will help to ensure availability of the appropriate vehicle(s) and for Holland America Line to provide an estimate of additional associated costs.

Guests should be aware that certain third party shore excursion facilities may not be fully accessible to guests with disabilities. Although Holland America Line endeavors to make sure these companies comply with legal requirements, they cannot guarantee that all are able to provide facilities that are accessible to individuals with disabilities. For detailed information on accessibility of shore excursions, it is strongly recommend that guests contact the Shore Excursions Department prior to embarkation at 1-888-425-9376 (or locally at 206-626-7320) or visit the Shore Excursions Office on board.

Wheelchair assistance that is requested for airports or train stations must be done directly through the airline or rail station. Holland America Line is not able to arrange for wheelchair assistance at airports or train stations.

We felt this was an excellent cruise. The staff were above average in service and knowledge.

Overall, an excellent cruise.

Relaxing trip to Alaska with perfect weather

| Alaska
This was our third trip to Alaska. This time the weather was excellent and views of Denali were spectacular. We had seen all the ports in previous visits, so we knew what to expect and skipped the offshore ship excursions. All in all it was a chance to unwind and enjoy the pampering. Would have liked to see more marine life from the ship. Not even many animals in Glacier Bay this time. But that's something the ship can't control, like the weather.

Nova Scotia cruise

| Montreal to Boston
Zaandam ship is well equipped, very nice cabins and cabin staff. Food was quite good. Although we prepaid for drink package, the drinks were watered down version. The cruise we took was suited for seniors. My son and his wife are in of age 60. This cruise was not suitable for them but apart from few disappointments like flaky internet and average entertainment , they were happy. Port of Sydney could be avoided. Nothing much there

Canada and New England

| Canada-New England
It was a nice cruise. The food was acceptable but not great in the Lido restaurant. OK for cafeteria-style dining. Room service was on time. The restaurants were excellent but there could have been more menu options.

Review of Boston to Montreal Cruise

| Boston, MA; Bar Harbor, ME; Halifax, NS; Charlottetown, PIE; Sidney, PIE; Quebec City, Quebec; Montreal.
Excellent overall experience. Our flight had weather delays before leaving from Atlanta and we almost missed the ship. We notified the Holland Travel Services Dept. when we landed in Boston. They alerted their crew at the airport who made sure we made it to the ship before it departed. We had booked the flight through Holland and purchased airport transfers from them also. The cruise was very enjoyable after we settled in and caught our breath.

FIRST TIMER

| Alaska
Will consider another trip just maybe not Holland. There are none going out of Houston out of Galveston

A Touch of Antarctica

| South America and Antarctica
I thought I would see more animals, sea animals and birds than I did. Due to my age and ability I had to be selective on the choices I made at ports. I felt the tours were pretty pricey. I have become used to inclusive cruises so missed that convenience. My stateroom was smaller also than I have had on Crystal and Regent. Too bad the gentlemen hosts have been eliminated. I thought that the big evening shows had been too as the back of the daily listed entertainment in the "lounges." When I discovered the big room entertainment I found the spot lighting sweeping the audience was very annoying. The desserts were very, very good. Breads were good but never warm and the butter was ice hard so spreading was impossible. The pizza in Lido was never hot. I found Lido confusing so did not like eating there. We appreciated the room service. It was excellent. The print was very faint in places on the Navigator and a Gala menu was hard to read. I found using the computer room very frustrating as it was a long series of steps to remember and follow. It had always been simple on other ships and help available in the room. The lectures were very informative. It was hard gathering port info re alternate available shuttles, taxies, vans, etc. or whether town would be available to just walk a bit and return to ship. I wanted to avoid food waste by having small portions. That was difficult. Really appreciated being able to stay in stateroom at debarkation time until our number/color was called. Long periods away from your bathroom is not good! Buying the transfers is a must. Very efficient and inexpensive. The service people were wonderful.

Kudos to HAL and Laurel

| Alaska
Hoped to see humpback whales bubble-net feeding, but most whales had already headed south to Hawaii by September, and not enough remained to cooperate in bubble-net feeding.

Quaint small ship

| Boston, Halifax, Quebec city, to Montreal
Great small ship, with very friendly crew who learns your name quickly. Call brands of liquor is limited. Would not recommend getting the elite liquor package. Entertainment is more informative than entertaining

Nice ship and staff, excellent food. Very smooth sailing. Plenty of activities, although our 17 year old did not attend the youth activities (didn't look like there were many older teens aboard). Shore excursions we took were good (Juneau - dog musher's camp, Skagway - White Pass railroad round trip). Took a bus to the Mendenhall Glacier in Juneau as well - glacier is really interesting and good visitor's center. We were glad we got a cabin with a window - next time would like to get a balcony. Tracy Arm was beautiful - this was the first sailing of the summer that was able to get into Tracy Arm (too much floating ice earlier in the season).

Excellent Ship

| South America & the Antarctic
Most enjoyable

Caribbean winter cruise

| St Thomas, Puerto Rico, Half Moon Cay, Dominican Republic, Aruba, Cura
Highly recommend!

Circle Hawaii Cruise

| Most Hawaii Islands, originating Vancouver, ending San Diego
Responsive crew, well trained, most congenial. Part of the Pearl Harbor tour was cancelled because of wind, not allowing a visit to the battleship Arizona, but the bill was compensated for the cancellation. Ship activities available were extensive. 5 days each direction just cruising the Pacific Ocean tended to be slow in passing.

Around Africa

| Africa
The lido food was more appetizing then the dining room. The ships staff was the most friendly of any ship we sailed

18 day trip from Vancouver to Hawaii

| Hawaii
The quality of the food and evening performances is less than it used to be.

Family Cruise

| Bar Harbor, Halifax, Sydney, Edmonton, Quebec, Montreal
Good cruise, nice weather helped, no complaints of food or service.

2022 Grand Africa Voyage

| Africa
From the time we left the Ft. Lauderdale port to our return, the Grand Africa Voyage was a trip of a lifetime! Highly recommend this cruise! There were several ports we arrived into that had not seen a cruise ship in over two years--they were grateful for the return of tourism. The port stops were wonderful adventures and the HAL shore excursions were plentiful and varied to meet different interests. The onboard Zaandam singers & dancers were fabulous as were guest performers and lecturers. Jeremy Hales, Cruise & Travel Director was amazing! He did an awesome job with daily updates, port presentations, and many other events. The food in the Lido Market, main dining room, and the Pinnacle was delicious with a variety of options, and the wait staff were delightful and funny.

Holland Zaandam--Vancouver to Seward AK

| Inside passage of Alaska
I would take a Holland trip again when going to the place that I want to go. Very professional organization. Alaska is great, and Holland brought us in touch with the State. Too much Tourists sales in the cities, but that is not Holland's fault. Typical for cruises.

Alaska with Denali extension, Cruise and land

| Vancouver to Seward, Seward to Denali, Denali to Anchorage
It was a wonderful experience. Shore excursions were very well organized and we were lucky with weather. Land portion was also very interesting, again we were lucky with weather and with wild life sightings during tundra tour. Travel from Seward to Denali by coach is a little long. Travel on return from Denali to Anchorage by train was a much more pleasant experience.

Alaskan Cruise 2016

| Glacier Bay,Haines, Juneau, Ketchikan Alaska
Improvement need in dining and onboard activities

Antarctica

| South America (Santiago round to Buenos Aires); Antarctica; Falkland Islands
This was a trip of a lifetime. We had great excursions, including ordering private car through HAL twice--great English guides/drivers gave us incredible insight into the local community. Scenery did not disappoint. Some of the ports were small but that gave us variety and we don't love a big city. We ate almost exclusively in the Pinnacle (upcharge for dinner, but breakfast service was free to Neptune Suite). We never ate in the Lido (buffet). Neptune Lounge food was the same every morning/noon/evening--a bit monotonous but you knew what to expect. Concierge was absolutely superb! Handled everything I needed and MORE! Incredible! She really pushed the trip to 5 Star status for us!

South America - Buenos Aires to Santiago

| South America
The ship has not been refurbished for several years and that does show. Still, the ship was always clean and well cared for.

Alaskan cruise

| Alaska
Generally OK, but most of cost of every excursion was too high for the quality of service. The service of Westmark was so poor and unkind. They looked so exhausted.

Amazing ship and crew!

| Alaska Inside Passage Land/Sea
LOVED Ms. Zandaam! Took the sea/land journey and had an amazing time. Park Rangers on-board presentation exceeded expectations.

Lovely ship

| Argentina, Uruguay, Cape Horn, Chile
The ship was very well-maintained. We loved the size of it. In general the staff was very nice too. We didn't have to wait for things like on the bigger ships. We liked the itinerary (South America). We enjoyed the entertainment and the EXC speakers.

good product

| Cruise from Boston to Montreal! with many stops along the way!
We began the Cruise in Boston in September and finished on 10-6 in Montreal! One of our goals was to see fall colors and we were a little early this year! Best colors were in Quebec with colors getting really pretty the day we flew home from Montreal! Overall the weather was great! It was very windy the day we were to spend in Charolete Town so they could not make that stop but they added great things for us to do that day on the ship!

High marks! The cruise was a good value. I put a deposit down on a future cruise on the Eurodam.

Alaska cruise on Zaandam

My sister, who has cruised before, thought that the ship was an older one, but it was well set up, with plenty of room.

Excellent Cruise Experience

| Montreal to Boston
This was our first ever cruise so we were a tiny bit apprehensive but we have to say that everything far exceeded our expectations. It's our 50th Wedding Anniversary and so this trip was part of our celebrations, our experience was terrific!

Patagonia cruise

| Buenos Aires to Valparaiso via Cape Horn
1. They accomplished what was advertised. 2. Internet access horrible, and cost criminally high. 3. They fumbled badly at the end. Our luggage was to be delivered to Santiago airport in time for our departure. It did not arrive, and we had to spend an extra night in Santiago ($205) waiting for it...and thus lost $300 on the prepaid room at out next destination. I expect some form of reimbursement.
