ms Volendam

4.5/5 |

The beautiful garden theme of the ms Volendam is reflected in an artful floral motif throughout the ship's spacious public rooms and elegant staterooms. "Flowers" can be found in abundance in the forms of floral fabrics and tapestries, as well as huge vases of tropical floral arrangements and chrysanthemums.

  • Special Dietary Needs - Advance Notice Required -

Special dietary requests, such as vegetarian, diabetic or gluten-free meals, are easily accommodated with advance notice. Kosher meals and a Health Conscious Dining option are also available. To arrange special meals, please contact the Ship Services Department at 1-800-541-1576 at least 90 days prior to departure.

    Food Allergies

For guests with food intolerances or allergies that are NOT life-threatening, please contact the Ship Services Department at (800)541-1576.

For guests with life-threatening food allergies, guests are asked to provide detailed information to the Access & Compliance Department by completing a Special Requirements Information (SRI) Form. Guests should indicate on this form which foods may potentially cause a severe reaction. Guests with a variety of severe food allergies sail with Holland America Line regularly. The galley staff on board is accustomed to and experienced in dealing with these types of needs. The galley itself has many different areas of food preparation, which can help reduce the possibility of cross-contamination. It is important to note, however, that meals are prepared in mass quantities on board, thus there is always the possibility of some cross-contamination. As such, Holland America Line cannot guarantee that a guest will not come in contact with those items. Although the Access & Compliance Department will provide the ship with an advance notice of all food allergies detailed on an SRI submitted to them, it is recommended that guests also contact the Dining Room Manager upon boarding to review the details of these special dietary needs.

  • Medical Emergencies -

If passengers become ill or injured during the voyage and the diagnostic and/or care needs exceed the capabilities of the infirmary, passengers will be transferred to medical facilities ashore.

Please note: Medicare and many health insurance plans DO NOT cover the cost of medical care at sea, in foreign countries, or for air evacuation. Guests are encouraged to obtain travel medical insurance prior to travel in order to be reimbursed for services rendered.

  • Pregnancy Policy -

Women cannot have begun their 24th week of pregnancy at any time before or during the cruise.

If you are pregnant, a physician

  • Smoking Policy -

For the comfort of all guests, smoking is prohibited in all staterooms, showrooms, and most other indoor areas. While smoking is not permitted in staterooms, guests are allowed to smoke on stateroom verandahs. Smoking is also permitted on certain other designated, outside decks. The designated smoking areas for all ships are as follows unless otherwise noted.

    • Stateroom verandahs
    • Casino (Active players only)
    • Seaview Bar
    • Outside Decks
    • Sports Deck

Cigar and pipe smoking is NOT allowed anywhere inside the ship; it is only permitted on the outside decks where smoking is allowed and on stateroom verandahs.

Electronic cigarettes are permitted in staterooms but not in other public areas of the ship other than on outside decks designated as smoking areas.

Any guest caught smoking inside their stateroom will be considered in violation of Holland America's smoking policy, and will be charged a US$250 cleaning fee per day of violation.

  • Wheelchair Access & Special Needs -

Holland America Line is committed to providing safe, easy, and accessible accommodations for all persons with disabilities, to the extent that is feasible. However, some needs require adequate time to prepare for a guest's arrival. It is recommended that guests make every effort to contact the Access & Compliance Department and submit a Special Requirements Information (SRI) Form well in advance of the departure of their cruise and/or cruisetour. It is recommended that an SRI form be submitted immediately upon booking, or a minimum of 45 days prior to departure.

Guests who are unable to care for their basic needs (e.g. dressing, eating, and attending safety drills) MUST have a capable traveling companion. The medical staff on board is not available for daily care unless an individual is hospitalized in the ship's Medical Center. In limited situations (either on board or ashore), Holland America may find it necessary to ask the individual to make alternative travel arrangements, such as if an individual with a disability is unable to satisfy certain specified safety and other criteria, even when provided with appropriate auxiliary aids and services.

    Wheelchair-Accessible Staterooms

Holland America Line vessels have specially designed staterooms for guests who use wheelchairs. If you have not booked a wheelchair accessible staterooms, but instead will be using a standard stateroom, it is important to know about some limitations that adversely impact maneuverability, especially ingress and egress into bathrooms. For example, bathroom dimensions, doorsills, and the height of bathtubs in standard staterooms are often difficult to negotiate for guests who have limited mobility. Additionally, standard stateroom doors and hallways may be too narrow for a wheelchair or scooter* to maneuver into and out of the stateroom.

*Note: For safety reasons, these mobility devices must be stored and charged in the guests' staterooms.

Wheelchair Accessible Staterooms offer features such as wider entry doors, roll-in showers with grab bars and benches/seats, and hand-held shower nozzles, as well as lowered closet and towel rods.

    • Wheelchair accessible stateroom entry doors measure 32 inches wide.
    • Wheelchair accessible bathroom doors measure 32 inches wide.

Accessible stateroom locations are noted on the Deck Plans for each ship.

    Ship Transfer Options

For individuals with limited mobility, the use of a wheelchair will be the primary mobility assistance aid for getting on and off the ship. Certain ship transfer operations (i.e. during tendering and at the gangways) may not be fully accessible to wheelchairs or scooters. When a ship is unable to dock, guests are taken ashore on smaller boats called tenders. Some guests with limited mobility may find it difficult to embark or disembark the ship at certain times while tendering or while docked due to steep gangways and steps, particularly during low or high tide. Also, please note that scooters and wheelchairs which are more than 100 lbs. (without the battery) are not allowed to be transferred from the ship to tender and/or from tender to shore.

Most Holland America Line vessels have been retrofitted with a tender-lift system that enables guests to roll directly on and off tenders while remaining in their wheelchairs. However, please be advised that adverse weather conditions such as wind, swells, or extreme tide levels may prohibit the use of the ship's tender lift equipment. Additionally, some port facilities may not be able to accommodate the lift equipment. If you require the use of this equipment, please speak with the Guest Relations Manager upon embarkation for further details or to coordinate specific arrangements.

Situations may occur in which guests with limited mobility may not be able to go ashore at the time they desire or are unable to go ashore at all in certain ports. For the safety of all concerned, the Captain shall make the final determination regarding whether or not it is advisable to provide assistance to guests with mobility impairments, or to carry their mobility assistance device (wheelchair, scooter, walker, etc.), taking into account all appropriate matters including, but not limited to, weather conditions, ship's location, weight of the guest or their mobility device, etc.

    Personal Mobility Equipment

For the safety of all guests and crew, and to enhance accessibility, Holland America Line strongly recommends that all personal electric mobility equipment meet the following criteria:

    • Width: 23" maximum (in order to be accommodated in a standard stateroom), unless collapsible to a width of 23" or less
    • Weight: 100 lbs. maximum (without battery)
    • Batteries: Must be gel or dry cell or AGM (Absorbed Glass Mat) only

Holland America Line recognizes that for some people, a larger scooter may be essential. If you believe you need a larger scooter, please contact the Access & Compliance Department to discuss your requirements.

For the safety of all guests and crew, scooters and other mobility equipment need to be securely stored and charged in the guest's stateroom, not in hallways or elevator lobbies. Scooters left in hallways and elevator lobbies could restrict people needing to travel through these areas in an emergency, particularly other guests using mobility aids, since they would have no way of getting by a scooter left in a hallway.

Holland America Line is no longer able to provide complimentary wheelchair assistance for any purpose other than embarkation, disembarkation, and emergency situations. Holland America Line wheelchairs are not available for shore excursions or for use on board. If you will require regular use of a wheelchair, it is recommended that you bring your own wheelchair with you. You may also make advance rental arrangements prior to your sailing and have a wheelchair delivered directly to the ship for use on board and in ports of call.

Special Needs at Sea and CareVacations/CruiseShipAssist are the vendors that Holland America Line has approved for delivery of mobility devices. Please contact these vendors directly for pricing and availability.

Please be advised that all pre-arranged mobility equipment rentals must be made by the guest and the third party provider. Consequently, you assume the entire risk of utilizing these third party services subject only to whatever terms or arrangements are made by you or on your behalf with the service provider. Refund issues must be dealt with solely between you and the service provider. We recommend contacting one of these companies to confirm your arrangements as soon as possible in order to ensure the availability of your specific requests.

    Shoreside Wheelchair Assistance

Because facilities in ports around the world vary significantly, wheelchair accommodations may not be available for some land tours and/or shore excursions. Furthermore, many transportation vehicles around the world do not have wheelchair lifts. Thus, it may be necessary for Holland America Line to make alternate transportation arrangements such as a sedan vehicle. This requires that a guest who uses a wheelchair be able to transfer from his/her wheelchair to the front or back seat of a sedan. Due to the limited number of lift-equipped vehicles in foreign locations, guests may incur additional costs for transportation related to airport transfers, shore excursions, and tour/hotel packages. Please note, lift equipped transportation within the United States may be arranged without additional costs. For information on alternative transportation arrangements and associated costs please contact the Access & Compliance Department . Please advise Holland America Line as far in advance as possible of any special needs for transfers. This will help to ensure availability of the appropriate vehicle(s) and for Holland America Line to provide an estimate of additional associated costs.

Guests should be aware that certain third party shore excursion facilities may not be fully accessible to guests with disabilities. Although Holland America Line endeavors to make sure these companies comply with legal requirements, they cannot guarantee that all are able to provide facilities that are accessible to individuals with disabilities. For detailed information on accessibility of shore excursions, it is strongly recommend that guests contact the Shore Excursions Department prior to embarkation at 1-888-425-9376 (or locally at 206-626-7320) or visit the Shore Excursions Office on board.

Wheelchair assistance that is requested for airports or train stations must be done directly through the airline or rail station. Holland America Line is not able to arrange for wheelchair assistance at airports or train stations.

FABULOUS SERVICE

| HONG KONG, VIETNAM, CAMBODIA, THAILAND, SINGAPORE
WE LOVED HAVING OUR TRAVEL AGENT TAKE CARE OF OUR DETAILS FOR THE TRIP. ALL WENT PERFECTLY.

Individual Vacation

| Panama Canal
All the employees of the ship were hard working and kind. Our stateroom had minor leaking problems but guest services department promptly corrected problems and were apologetic. Overall we had a wonderful trip and highly recommend to our friends.

Alaska cruise/land tour

| Loved Skagway and Denali trip ventures
Would definitely cruise on a HA ship again, more than satisfied with this trip

3 day cruse Vancouver - Skagway, Alaska

| Alaska
Very nice room. The first night when I pulled back the sheet, there was a washed Kleenex laying on the bed. Were given ship credits of $100 each along with cancelation of an excursion at $35 each. Wow, $270!! Did not know we would be charged gratuities of $16 per person per day. Was glad we had credit to pay for that! We were also told that we would be arriving in Juneau 3 hours early due to a medical issue. So using up our credits shopping was cut short. Also didn't know that the whole next day, as we traveled to Skayway that we would not be able to use our ship credits to shop. I heard others left behind large amounts of credits also. Use your credits wisely and fast. Maybe these credits should also apply to the many land shops owned by Holland Am in these port towns.?? We were also told the $70 for the canceled excursions would be coming back as dollars in our account vs ship credit. Still waiting on that.

Beautiful ship

| Ketchican, Glacier Bay, Vancouver
It was a very nice cruise. Loved getting so close to the glaciers.

Dining

| Japan & Korea
Having completed a cruise on the Zaamdam prior to the cruise, we noticed that the quality of the food was not as good. The food was not bad but could have been better.

14 Day Volendam Cruise

| 14 day cruise thru the Southern Caribbean
The entertainment was mediocre and one comment from a fellow cruiser that was on the 72 day cruise proceeding ours was "what entertainment?" On his trip before it was far better. The food choices in the main dining room were lacking. It is our first cruise that 40% of our choices were an extra charge. Lobster was never offered for 14 days without paying extra but turkey was offered twice as a choice. The food that we had was very well prepared and in good portions. The meals we had in the specialty restaurants were excellent. The food choices in the cafeteria were great and delicious. We found all the staff and crew members to be beyond excellent and well trained. We were always greeted with a smile and there were many instances we were greeted by name which was a nice personal touch. obviosly

| Japan and Korea
Really enjoyed the cruise

Wonderful Volendam

| Panama Canal
Volendam is just coming out of 2 week dry dock and this cruise was her last one before the dry dock. Overall, I love the Volendam. I would definitely recommend a balcony suite for future guests. Deck 6 was perfect access up or down to places I wanted to go (the gym and the bar!) Ship is getting upgrades in dry dock. Volendam does show her age in many places but, to me, has a wonderful, older, cruise ship feel.

For my first cruise, this was grand. The journey through the Canal Zone was the reason I was excited to go - and it didn't disappoint. The other ports of call were a bonus. Especially enjoyed the Mayan ruins of Mexico, Antigua, Guatemala with it's active volcano; Costa Rico and the Old City & Fort of Cartagena.

Fantastic Week on Sea & Land

| Alaska & Yukon Adventure
We were on the ship for just three days, but everything was wonderful. We look forward to sailing again with Holland America for a longer cruise. The accommodations, and staff were very helpful and attentive. We were very pleased with our short stay aboard your beautiful ship.

Grand Voyage South America

| South America Grand Voyage
Holland America had delivered an experience of a lifetime. The entire South America experience was beautiful and amazing. The Antarctica viewing and experience was unbelievable and will never be forgotten. The captain navigated the Antarctica and the Amazon with unbeatable skills to ensure optimal pleasure and safety. Very nice "pillow gifts" on Gala nights to pleasant & helpful staff.

Alaska inside passage 7 day cruise

| Alaska
Loved the wildlife connection with the park rangers and the deck spotting. Kids club should include a meet and greet with the captain to make them feel special and included. More rooms needed to be offered for my kids to feel comfortable in the ship on at sea days. Less movies to “entertain” kids in the kids club. Entertainment was varied and very professional(especially the Italian string quartet).

Alaska via Holland America

| Alaska inside passage
Many thanks to my agent for her friendly, knowledgeable service to us. She contacted us weekly and offered good advice and suggestions.

Just giving feedback

V365 voyage. The cabin stewards served me well. There was no refrigerator and I was keeping medicine cool with ice. Sam and August (Agus). Did a great job refreshing the needed ice.

Great Trip

| Alaska
This was the first cruise we had ever been on so we decided to do it all, land and sea. It was first class and the way.

Fletcher family vacation

| Southeast asia
cruise lines are cutting corners to cut costs, not a good idea.

Alaska tour

| Anchorage
Very nicely organized. Not good clarification regarding gift certificate. Most the people lost money including us. Will try again

Alaska Cruise

| Alaska first time on a cruise
Everything was very enjoyable and Edward Infanti was extremely helpful. My husband was very sceptical about going on the trip but throughly loved it and we will go again ????

Another great Holland America cruise

| Southeastern Alaska
We are loyal Holland cruisers because it offers great itineraries at fair prices, demographics of passengers are compatible

Ship Needs Updating

| Juneau/Land and Sea Yukon Denali Skagway Whitehorse Dawson City Anchorage
Older ship needs updates to cabins and decor on the ship. No outlet in bathroom which was small. Only outlet in cabin in sitting area. Very inconvenient. Ship not recommended but land portion was excellent

Vancouver to Skagway

| Juneau and Skagway
This was a great start to our land/sea trip to the Yukon and Canada. I liked doing the sea segment first. The land segment from Skagway to Dawson City aligned with the path of the gold rush. It also saved the best parts, Denali and the Alaska Railway for the end. The weather for the whole trip was great.
