ms Maasdam

4.1/5 |

Named for the Maas River in the Netherlands, the ms Maasdam is the fifth ship in Holland America Line's 135-year history to bear the name. At 720-feet, the ms Maasdam is designed to carry fewer guests while providing more space for maximum comfort. Many staterooms feature commanding ocean views, and each suite has a private verandah.

Boston to Canada

Great cruise and weather

New England / Canada

| New England - Canada
Excursions choices were ok but EVERY guide on all trips was excellent. A lot of shops in Canada were already closed and the gentleman for Maasdam Excursion desk was rude, uninformed and absolutely not help to anyone. We were not the only ones that experienced that observation. The cruise direct, Jude was excellent, informed and gave us some good ideas for on and off the ship. Many people were disappointed that most of the time cruising down the St. Lawrence Seaway was at night and we could not enjoy any scenery along the way. I think everyone thought we would be able to see that area. Cruise line needs to review this situation. Maybe in the summertime and the late sunsets, one might be able to see more. Would not recommend going on this trip to see the leaves, only the last two stops had any color, and the temps had dropped considerably. It looks like Canada and their many parks and flowers would be beautiful and very photographic in the summer.

Maasdam Polynesian Crossing

| French Polynesia
Great itinerary with great cruisers served by excellent and efficient crew.

Future cruising on Holland America

| Panama Canal
Could not use the balcony because of all the cigar and cigarette smoke. Our balcony smelled bad and I am allergic to the smoke

HAL MAASDAM

| CANADA/NEW ENGLAND
SEE ABOVE. BUT I'M NONCOMMITTAL ON THE RECOMMENDATION QUESTION BELOW.

10 Wonderful Eastern Caribbean Days

| San Juan, St. Maartens, St. Kitt, Antigua, and St. Thomas, plus HAL's private island.
The Maasdam is one of three older ships: The Statendam, the Maasdam and the Ryndam, all cut from the same footprint. I happen to like all the artwork, the high polished wood trim and the general ambience of all three of these ships. The adjective I would most likely use to describe them is classy. My only complaint was the location of my stateroom. I won't accept such a placement again either from HAL or my travel consultant. This, however, did not affect my enjoyment of the cruise. I like the way the staff treats the passengers and that is partly the reason I choose Holland American Line cruises.

Their Yesterdays

| Boston to Montreal
Our stateroom was nice and roomy and the ship was clean. We enjoyed the size of the ship over the larger ships (floating hotels). The person who gave a talk on acupuncture and chinese medicine was very hard to understand and she spoke very quietly so a microphone would have been helpful along with lowering the music in the room. The American Kitchen presentations were enjoyable and informative. During meals in the cafe, we could year loud banging above. Someone suggested that it may have been kids playing basketball overhead.

Sept. Cruise

| Montreal, Quebec City, Charlottetown, Sydney, Halifax, Bar Harbor, Boston
When asked if you would like black and white pictures taken, they should tell you the price before the pictures are taken instead of after the fact and you like one of them. Would not pay the price they were asking when you can get the others for $20.

South Pacific

| Australia, New Zealand, South Pacific Islands, Oahu, San Diego
Overall a very nice trip with great ports in Australia and New Zealand.

25 day cruise over holidays

| Barbados, Aruba, St. Croix, St. Martens,St. Kitts, Gatun Lake, Panama Canal
This was one of the best cruises we took especially on Holland America. The ship was a great size, personnel was the best of any cruise we have taken. Food was on a scale of 1 to 10 a 15+. We cannot rave enough about this particular ship in general. Lots to do. Will definately said on this ship again.

Maasdam experience

| Alaska
Loved intimacy of smaller ship..loved having a priest on board..

cruising

| Alaska
The embarkation process was flawless, also disembarkation, I appreciated the fact that by using the luggage process, my luggage was picked up the night before the cruise ended and it arrived safe at my final destination in South Florida.

Maasdam

The ship is old but it handled well. We had no trouble with our stateroom or with the public areas. The captain certainly knew his business and kept us informed about reasons for this and that. We saw a raft on a sea day and the ship turned around to check it out, sending a tender to make sure there was no one aboard. It was empty, but it was wonderful that we stopped in case we could be of help. We like a ship with a complete promenade deck, especially on sea days. We think that putting "lanais" on that deck should be a crime, though. We heard that Holland America is having difficulty recruiting qualified staff, and this certainly showed with the cruise director and assistant director positions. The service staff as always were outstanding.
