A Trip to Shangri La
By Nancy and Charles Nevil
If you are looking for a little something different to while away the afternoon whilst in Honolulu, may we suggest a visit to the home of Doris Duke, the flamboyant heiress of days gone by. It is truly a marvelous and glorious experience.
Built in 1937, and located on the other side of the Diamond Head crater on 5 acres of oceanfront property, it houses one of the greatest collections of Islamic art in the world. You must make a reservation in order to visit the home, and the cost is $25.00 per person. It is well worth it! She was a most interesting lady, and had an incredible eye for fine art. The house is amazing!
They have 3 showings a day and you meet at the Honolulu Academy of Arts on Beretania St. ( that too is an experience to enjoy!) where you board a private van to the estate. There is only space for 25 on each tour, so if interested, book well in advance so as not to miss a unique and delightful experience. We booked the 11am tour, and upon our return ate lunch at the museum café. It was wonderful!!! The lamb salad was absolutely delicious!!!
