Tahiti

Did You Know?

  • It takes under 8 hours to fly form Los Angeles to Tahiti
  • Tahiti is in the same time zone as Hawaii and is as far south as the equator

Tahiti, often called "The Island of Love" is the largest of the 118 islands and atolls that comprise French Polynesia. The exotic name "Tahiti" not only refers to this island but also to the group of islands that comprise French Polynesia.
Papeete, Tahiti's capital is the economic and political heart of French Polynesia. It is also the telecommunications and airline center along with the largest population base of all the islands. It is a busy port city with international cargo freighters, copra ships, luxury liners and sailing yacht charters sharing its harbor. Its streets hum with cars, motor scooters and colorful open-air buses called "le truck".

There are fine restaurants and sidewalk cafes offering excellent cuisine to suit all tastes and budgets. Shop for black pearls, hand-blocked fabrics, exquisitely carved bowls, drums, tikis, local shell crafts, baskets and vanilla beans. French imports such as perfumes are available in duty free shops. A "must see" is the Central Market located downtown behind the waterfront. It displays in an open-air fashion local flowers, fruits, fish and Tahitian handicrafts.

Away from the downtown area take a leisurely drive or guided tour around the island and discover the many faces of Tahiti. The scenic drives around Tahiti dazzle the senses with the tropical richness of nature. Country villages pose for postcard scenes and lush tropical flower gardens surround even the most modest of homes. Birdhouse-shaped boxes stand by the road in front of each home, ready to receive the daily delivery of fresh French bread while breadfruit trees with their waxy green leaves shade the road.

Many visitors arriving in Papeete no doubt expect grass huts, natives wearing pareos and the quiet crash of the surf. They are surprised to discover the hustle and bustle of this busy port city. On your way into or out of the outer islands, which offer a more tranquil, romantic setting, Tahiti is an interesting place to stop for a day or two. A stay on Tahiti at the end of your journey is especially convenient for last minute shopping and easy transit to your departing international flight.

US and Canadian citizens need a valid passport. Those from other countries should check with one of our Tahiti Specialist or the French Consulate.

Language
The official languages are Tahitian and French. English is also spoken in hotels and most restaurants and shops.

Activities
There is plenty to do in Tahiti, from water sports to land activities to just relaxing on the beach. Diving, snorkeling and surfing are superb; there is a profusion of coral, fish and undersea plan life. On land, enjoy a circle island tour, hiking, horseback riding and shopping for exquisite black pearls, handicrafts and souvenirs. We offer many optional tours, and we suggest you booking in advance.

Clothing
Tahiti offers a very casual atmosphere. During the day, shorts, bathing suits or a pareu (a wrap-around cloth garment) are recommended, plus a hat or sun visor and sunglasses. In the evening, a shirt, slacks or shorts and casual shoes for men and a sundress, slacks or shorts for ladies may be worn. June through September, evenings may be cool enough for a light sweater.

Dining
Tahiti offers everything from traditional native fare to fine French cuisine, plus American, Chinese and Italian dishes. You can an also enjoy a picnic on a private “motu” (a small islet), eat at a fine restaurant or an outdoor café, or savor a traditional feast or a beach barbecue.

Many hotels offer meal plans. The American Plan (AP) includes breakfast, lunch and dinner (BLD) and the Modified American Plan (MAP), includes breakfast and dinner (BD). The prices of these packages are shown with most hotel offers.

Regent's Gauguin Celebrates 10 Years in Tahiti

Published on: May 2, 2007 Modern Agent

Regent Seven Seas Cruises' 330-guest Paul Gauguin is celebrating 10 years of operating year-round in Tahiti and French Polynesia. The ship has carried more than 100,000 passengers to these islands. A selection of 43 voyages in 2008 includes itineraries from seven to 11 nights calling on the Society and Tuamotu Islands, as well as longer voyages to the Marquesas, Cook and Austral islands. In response to increased demand from guests, Regent Seven Seas' 2008 program features a greater number of shorter, seven-night cruises than in recent years. Guests aboard the Paul Gauguin can extend their vacation with seven pre- and post-cruise land programs in Tahiti in 2008.

In addition to the established programs offered on Tahiti, Bora Bora and Moorea, two new properties are offered: Le Taha'a Private Island and Spa; and the Moorea Pearl Resort and Spa. Special extensions are also offered to Australia and New Zealand in conjunction with select departures. Through an exclusive partnership with Jean-Michel Cousteau and his conservation organization, Ocean Futures Society, young guests and their parents may participate in "Ambassadors of the Environment" Circles of Interest aboard 12 sailings in 2008.

Jean-Michel Cousteau will sail aboard the 14-night Cook, Austral, Tuamotu and Society islands voyage departing Sept. 27, 2008. Regent President Mark Conroy will sail on a 14-night Marquesas, Tuamotu and Society Islands cruise departing from Papeete on Jan. 5, 2008. Paul Gauguin's 2008 voyages start at $2,195 for seven-night roundtrips from Papeete, Tahiti. Cruise fares include all shipboard gratuities; complimentary beverages, including select wines and spirits served throughout the ship; complimentary 24-hour room service; refrigerator stocked with soft drinks, beer and bottled water replenished daily; and an in-suite bar setup in butler suites. Many sailings also offer a "third guest sails free" option, available in select staterooms. For more information, call 800-300-4567 or visit www.regent-seven-seas-cruises-discount.com
