ITINERARY

  • Day 1 BOARD YOUR OVER­NIGHT TRANSATLANTIC FLIGHT.
  • Day 2, Sun. ARRIVE MARSEILLE, FRANCE / ARLES. at Arles Arrive in Marseille and transfer to the ship docked in Arles. (D)
  • Day 3, Mon. ARLES. at Arles A walking tour starts downtown and then continues to the Roman Amphitheater, Town Hall Square with the City Hall, and the St. Trophime Cathedral, a Romanesque cathedral built in the 12th century. See the former ­hospital where van Gogh was treated in 1889, now the museum Espace van Gogh, dedicated to his life and work. Afterward, pass Forum Square and Constantine's Roman Baths on the way back to your cruise ship. (B,L,D)
  • Day 4, Tue. AVIGNON. at Avignon A tour of ancient Avignon starts at Clocktower Square, with its many cafés, shops and namesake clock tower dating back to the 1300s. Then, on to Pope's Palace Square for a visit to the Papal Palace. Next, travel up to Rocher des Doms, where Avignon was first settled. This evening your ship's captain hosts a Welcome Dinner. (B,L,D)
  • Day 5, Wed. VIVIERS. at Viviers Stop in the quaint city of Viviers. Your walking tour here starts in Old Town with stops at the Rue Chèvrerie, Porte Riquot Maison des Chevaliers, Rue du Chateau, and Maison Élémentaire du Commerçant. Then stroll through the medieval streets of this historic town as you head back to the ship. (B,L,D)
  • Day 6, Thu. TAIN L'HERMITAGE / TOURNON. at Tournon Nestled among famous vineyards is the little town of Tain L'Hermitage. You might want to ­celebrate this region by indulging in some of its famous ­chocolate and Côte du Rhône wines. Then on to visit Tournon and see its ­feudal ­castle. (B,L,D)
  • Day 7, Fri. LYON. at lyon Founded by Julius Caesar about 2,000 years ago, Lyon has a wealth of Roman remains, as well as many impres­sive museums, Renaissance archi­tecture, and world-renowned cuisine. Start today's tour with a drive to a good vantage point to see the Basilique Notre Dame de Fourvière, Lyon's hallmark church. Next, stop on Croix-Rousse Hill for a dramatic view of the Beaujolais Mountains and Saône River. Then, on a coach ride through town, see Terreaux Square, the Fine Art Museum, and the Opera House. The afternoon is free to explore on your own. You can wander through the Renaissance quarter with its maze of medieval passageways, or simply relax with a glass of beaujolais at one of the many taverns. (B,L,D)
  • Day 8, Sat. BEAUNE EXCURSION. at lyon Travel to the medieval town of Beaune, the center for Burgundy wine making. Admire the Flemish-influenced architecture, including the eye-catching Hospices de Beaune. A hospital from 1443 to the 1960s, it is now a museum dedicated to the ­history of healthcare. (B,L,D)
  • Day 9, Sun. CHÂLON / DEPART LYON. at lyon Bid your friendly crew farewell and transfer to Lyon for your return flight. Please book departing flights after 10:00 a.m. (CB)
