Discover the Great Outdoors
Make Summer Travel About Seeing, Volunteering at National Parks
The Signal - Business Section, April, 2006
As we prepare for summer vacation, this year it’s all about rediscovering America. We’ve talked about the many interesting cities across the country, but what about the great outdoors. Isn’t it about time to take a trip to discover our national parks?
From the Grand Canyon to the Grand Tetons, and closer to home to Joshua Tree and Yosemite, these national treasures offer an adventure like none other. Spectacular sights, outdoor recreation like hiking, biking, riding, camping and paddling, and even the option for luxury accommodations await travelers. To enjoy Mount Rushmore you are not required to rough it and sleep in a tent; there are more comfortable alternatives the caliber of the Four Seasons.
Here in North America, the National Park Foundation wants tourists to come share the experience at one of many distinctive parks the U.S. has to offer. Chartered by Congress, the mission of the foundation is to strengthen the lasting connection between the American people and their national parks. To accomplish this, they need to increase public awareness to help raise needed funds, grants and to engage in strategic partnerships.
One way the foundation does this is by selling a National Parks Pass, which gives pass-holders entry for one-year to any national park that requires a fee. The pass costs $50, and more than 80% of the fee goes directly back to serve the national parks restoration and preservation efforts, and other vital programs.
Plus many of the parks offer volunteer opportunities for youth and adults. Even individual travel and tourism firms are finding the joys of giving back. Tauck World Discovery is one of these remarkable companies.
Since its early days more than 80 years ago, Tauck has been an active and innovative supporter of our national parks. The family-owned and operated business not only leads exciting journeys to more than 50 of the most popular national parks in America, they are also philanthropists.
Giving back both volunteer hours and financial resources, the non-profit affiliate Tauck Foundation has over the years earmarked hundreds of thousands of dollars for the National Parks Foundation. They also offer travel adventures that feature “on-tour” volunteer time for guests.
From Crater Lake to Yellowstone, Tauck presents a variety of ways for travelers to roll up their sleeves and get their hands dirty in the name of making a difference. This world of giving effort helps promote public awareness about the parks, distinctive ecosystems, local habitats and the need to honor and preserve our many unique national outdoor jewels.
Whether you visit or volunteer, just getting to see and discover these made in America parks is a trip worth taking. Pitch a tent, stay at the Four Seasons, find a quaint lodge, however you approach this adventure is sure to be memorable.
So grab a map, get out of the city and discover the great outdoors this summer.
