Home Destinations South Pacific Cook Islands Explore Cook Islands

Rarotonga (the first island to be settled among those now known as The Cooks) is believed to have been initially settled around the 8th century AD by people fleeing overpopulation in Polynesia. In fact, the main road that circles the island, Ara Metua, is said to be 1200 years old. The collection of islands were named after Captain James Cook who landed on the island shores in 1773.

Even today, only 14,000 people live on the fifteen islands that make up The Cooks. Located in the center of the Polynesian Triangle, they are spread across approximately 870,000 square miles with Tonga and the Samoas to the west and Tahiti and the French Polynesian Islands to the east. They are a still predominantly undiscovered treasure of the Pacific Ocean.

But don’t let their small size make you think rustic accommodations are the only thing to be found. Simple apartments and rooms can certainly be rented. But luxurious resorts with perfectly appointed villas, private pools, and sublime restaurants also await.

The Cook Islands is home to beauty, serenity, and an impressive variety of things to do. Prices are surprisingly affordable. With the high value of the US Dollar when exchanged with the New Zealand Dollar (the currency of The Cooks) visitors can, for once, live high without paying so high.

Beach destinations offer predictable activities but The Cooks offer a vast range above and beyond what one might generally expect. Visitors who want the local scene, for example, can book a progressive dinner that will take them “behind the scenes,” so to speak, to meet the people, taste the foods, and truly immerse themselves in the cultural richness of The Cooks. Guests are picked up at their hotel and then driven to three separate homes for a three-course dinner, one served in each home — appetizers, main course, and dessert respectively. Hosts are all Cook Islands locals and treat guests as if they were not new acquaintances but instead as if they were long lost family and friends. Touring the family gardens rife with coconuts, passion fruit, mangoes, and papaya, sharing sparkling wine in cups fit for toasting, and enjoying local music while taking in spectacular views, guests can not only see The Cooks but also truly experience it.

For divers both experienced and not, The Cooks offer a variety of diving opportunities. Even for those who are not certified and who have never strapped on a tank, there are shallow dives that require only a thirty-minute training. There are a variety of dive shops that provide everything from flippers to ever patient instructions, leading divers — newbie and seasoned — through the coral to see impressive varieties of sea life, including octopi and eel when the conditions are right. More experienced divers can opt for boat dives where deeper locations are explored and even more surprises await.

A short forty-five minute flight takes visitors from Rarotonga to Aitutaki where even more untouched shoreline awaits. There too, guests can snorkel, take in an Island Nights show, complete with local singing, dancing, and music, or cruise the lagoon to a private island where a lunch of fresh fruits, seafood and vegetables will be prepared just for them. On the undeveloped and uninhabited One Foot Island, a stop along the lagoon cruise trips, visitors can get their passports stamped and send a postcard at the “Post Office” (a counter built of planks manned by your lagoon cruise captain upon your arrival!) Hike the island, wade in the crystal blue and green waters, and breathe in the air of a place that has escaped modernity without exception.

If you can’t buy an island all your own, The Cook Islands is the next best thing, with its friendly, welcoming people; fresh, delicious food; and unspoiled beaches and terrain. The only problem with visiting The Cooks is that you may never want to go home again.
