Copenhagen, Denmark
Tivoli Gardens, Copenhagen
Founded in 1843, Tivoli is located where the once-fortified city's ramparts used to be, and the park's on-site lake is a remnant of the city's moat. Children of all ages visit year round for the old-world carnival-style atmosphere and the exciting attractions. Test your mettle on a number of extreme thrill rides (including The Demon and The Spinning Top). Tamer rides and activities are in abundance as well. Young ones will not want to miss the grand carousel or the aquarium. Older folk tend to congregate in and around Tivoli's nearly 40 bars and restaurants, some of which are tres gourmet and may date as far back as 1843. World-class live entertainment is always provided, and the festivities get kicked into high gear during the Christmas season.
The Little Mermaid, Copenhagen
Copenhagen's most famous tourist attraction, the Little Mermaid sits on a rock overlooking the harbor. It was created by Edward Eriksen in 1913, who was inspired by Hans Christian Andersen's fairytale. The model for the Mermaid was dancer Ellen Price. The statue's head was stolen in 1964 and although police hunted for several years, neither the perpetrator nor the head were found. The head has been replaced by a replica but jokers still occasionally try to saw it off.
Canal Tours, Copenhagen
Armed with a strong fleet of 16 comfortable boats, five of which are heated and covered, the DFDS takes you through a guided journey along the city s harbor and canal. At least one of the multilingual staff members is always onboard, enlightening guests on the picturesque surroundings. Choose from the various tours available. And for something unusual, go for the Dinner Cruise, where you can enjoy a delectable meal as you cruise along the waters. And if you have charted your own itinerary, then just go ahead and rent one of their boats.
Helsinki, Finland
Helsinki Cathedral, Helsinki
The Lutheran Cathedral (St. Nicholas Church) is Helsinki's most important landmark. The majestic outline of its 71 meter central tower illustrates the true glory of the White City of the North. The cathedral was designed by C. L. Engel in 1830; when Engel died in 1840, E. B. Lohrmann took over the supervision and added several touches to the original blueprints, including details in the simple yet beautiful interior. The cathedral was finally completed in 1852, though the famous grand steps would not be there for another 20 years. Despite the western, classical style, the influences of Russia and especially that of Czar Nicholas I are also visible. The cathedral's famous statues of the Apostles were originally Nicholas's idea. The Czar also donated the altarpiece, the work of Russian artist von Neff. The cathedral has a high—ceilinged crypt, a venue for exhibitions and concerts, and a café open every summer. The cathedral, decorated with statues of Mikael Agricola and the religious reformers Luther and Melanchthon, hosts both ordinary and more official (Government and University) services, as well as various concerts.
Suomenlinna Maritime Fortress, Helsinki
The Suomenlinna Maritime Fortress was built during periods of Swedish and Russian rule of Finland in the 18th Century. Having been compared to the Fort of Gibraltar, today the Suomenlinna Fortress is one of the biggest dry docks in the world. The Fortress was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1991 and today is home to some 900 Finns. Suomenlinna is actually composed of 8 islands and also houses a Naval Academy. Other facilities in Suomenlinna include several museums, a visitors’ center, several restaurants and cafes, a hostel and various shops.
Turku, Finland
Located in the southwest of Finland, Turku is not only the oldest city in Finland, but once their capital city. Turku is proud to house two of the country’s national treasures, the Turku Cathedral and Turku Castle. Turku has something for every visitor – art museums, botanical gardens, a golf course and of course shopping and dining for sampling local cuisine.
Golden Circle, Southern Iceland
The Golden Circle is a popular route for tourists located in southern Iceland. Its main sights include the Gullfoss (the Golden Waterfall), the geysers at Haukadalur (Geysir and Strokkur) and Pingvellir National Park. These sights are some of the most popular tourists’ attractions and natural wonders in the country.
Lake Myvatn, Iceland
The lake is a national conservation area because of its geological features and many species of ducks. Heavy volcanic activity in the region has made this a hot spot for visitors looking for a thermal mud bath. The area is very diverse, ranging from hot thermal springs to mud pits, to barren lava fields.
Oslo, Norway
Oslo, Norway’s capital and largest city, is encircled by wooded hills and snowcapped peaks. The city displays a mixture of several architectural styles. A full range of activities includes art galleries, museums, restaurants, theaters and nightclubs. Other points of interest include Royal Palace; Frogner Park, known for its famous Vigeland sculptures; Holmenkollen, where international skiing events take place; imposing Åkershus Castle; and Bygdøy Peninsula, home to some of Oslo’s most important museums. Many attractions can be explored on foot. Oslo's City Hall ranks as the most distinctive part of Oslo’s waterfront. The art portrays the country's different historical and domestic phases. Munch Museum, which is dedicated to the life work of Norway’s famous painter, contains more than 5,000 drawings and paintings. National Gallery has the nation’s largest collection of Norwegian art and some of Munch’s best-known works. Åkershus Fortress & Castle, transformed into a Renaissance palace in the 17th century, houses Norway’s Resistance Museum.
Bergen, Norway
With its spectacular setting among seven hills, Bergen is one of the most beautiful and enjoyable cities in Norway. Most sites are within an easy walk from the harbor. From fine surviving medieval buildings to a series of good museums such as Fishery Museum and Old Bergen open-air museum, Bergen offers a wide variety of attractions. Its scenic beauty can best be appreciated from Mt. Floyen and is captivating. Enjoy this lovely city by taking a stroll to the old part of town, passing impressive 12th-century Bergenhus fortress. Old Hanseatic Wharf, called Bryggen, is where reconstructed gabled buildings house workshops, boutiques and restaurants. St. Mary's Church is Bergen’s oldest building and one of the finest Norman churches in Norway. Rasmus Meyers Collection is a rambling townhouse featuring one of the best collections of Norwegian art, including an upper floor devoted almost entirely to Munch. Bergen boasts numerous historic buildings dating from medieval times: Bergenhus Fortress; Rosenkrantz Tower; Haakon’s Hall.
Stockholm, Sweden
Skansen Open-Air Museum, Stockholm
Skansen claims to be the first open-air museum in the world. Located in Djurgården, this museum also has a zoological park that displays Scandinavian fauna. Arthur Hazelius laid the foundation of this museum-park in 1891 to showcase the historical transition of the Swedish people. Historic buildings that date back to the 18th century surround the park, and the hosts dressed in traditional and period costumes greet the visitors. The park is open all through the year, and tourists throng to the place to experience the 18th century lifestyle.
Gamla Stan, Stockholm
Gamla stan (Old Town) is genuine Stockholm. Its cobbled streets and narrow 17th-century alleys create an atmosphere like nowhere else in the world. If you visit nothing else while in Stockholm, be sure to spend at least an hour or two here. It will enchant visitors of all ages. Gamla stan will interest history buffs and shoppers alike with small and large shops on both sides of the street offering jeweler, souvenirs, rare books and gifts. You may also hear street musicians along the way.
Visby, Sweden
Today a thriving holiday resort, Visby on the Baltic island of Gotland has become famous as 'the town of roses and ruins' - a living relic of a medieval heyday when this Hanseatic port vied in riches and fame with the great capitals of mainland Europe. Now its narrow cobbled streets and ruined churches reside behind the two-and-a-half mile 13th century city wall, a haunting monument to a lost glory. Gotland and Oland are part of the Baltic islands off the southeast coast of Sweden. Gotland is a blend of old and new with its natural beauty and cultural heritage. Hoards of coins and other treasures found on the island indicate its importance in maritime trade as far back as the Bronze Age. Gotland was nominally Swedish as early as the 9th century but long remained autonomous. In the Middle Ages Visby was a rich and important member of the Hanseatic League and had many splendid churches and elaborate fortified walls. Gotland was conquered by Denmark in 1361 and returned to Swedish rule in 1645.
