WE’RE YOUR EXPERTS TO MAUI!
No one can deny that Maui's beaches are some of the best in the world, but there's more to Maui than its coastline. Venturing inland leads to some truly breathtaking scenery that makes this island even more spectacular, and an exhilarating place to explore. Discover why the beach is just the beginning in Maui.
In the inland center of Maui is Iao Valley State Park, home to the landmark 1,200-foot Iao Needle. This towering rock formation juts upward from the valley floor, a ragged peak of brown lava rock that contrasts with the blue skies and lush, deep green vegetation. Hiking trails abound near the Needle that lead to lookout points with stunning views of both the Needle itself and the surrounding scenery.
Eastern Maui boasts another spectacular place to explore, Haleakala National Park. Haleakala Crater is the world's largest dormant volcano, and its 10,000-foot slope is a hiker’s paradise, with trails that lead above the cloud line for an unforgettable experience. The Park’s terrain also makes for an array of microclimates: trails traverse lush valleys, parched deserts, and everything in between - including coastal waterfalls. Haleakala Crater is also regarded as one of the best places to watch a Hawaiian sunrise creep over the horizon, or to end the day with a sunset and stargazing through Maui's clear skies.
For the true nature lover, Maui's best offering is the Pipiwai Trail, roughly nine miles from Hana at the edge of Haleakala National Park. This fantastic hike follows the Pipiwai Stream that feeds through the O’heo Gulch, a stunning river valley known for a series of crystal clear ponds that fill craters in the rocks called the Seven Sacred Pools. But as gorgeous as they are, the pools don't hold a candle to the final payoff of the Pipiwai Trail: Waimoku Falls, Maui's largest waterfall. Towering 400 feet above the gulch floor, Waimoku cascades down a sheer lava rock wall into a pool filled with boulders. It is a natural spectacle that truly must be seen to be believed, and makes for a breathtaking way to have a break from the beach!
Activities & Attractions:
HALEAKALA NATIONAL PARK - it was here that, according to local legend, the demigod Maui imprisoned the sun and held it captive to lengthen the daylight hours. The park features the dormant Haleakala Volcano, which last erupted over 500 years ago, and the coastal Kipahulu, filled with over two dozen pools, and countless native plants and animals.
IAO VALLEY - an enchantingly tranquil park, this valley spans 6.2 acres of dense rainforest. It was once the site of the bloody Battle of Kepaniwai, in which Kamehameha defeated the Maui army in an attempt to unify the islands.
KAPALUA - The luxurious Kapalua Resort on the northwest coast of Maui offers its residents and guests golf, tennis, restaurants, three beaches, vacation condominium, and luxury hotel accommodations.
KAUMAHINA STATE WAYSIDE PARK - the halfway point on the drive from Kahului to Hana, it consists of almost 8 acres of exotic plants and forest, and is the perfect place to rest and picnic.
LAHAINA - once the capital of the Hawaiian Kingdom and historic heart of Maui, this colorful town has become a real hot spot with art galleries, shops, restaurants, and a famous luau.
However, you can still see evidences of whaling days, ancient Hawaiian rulers, missionaries, and plantation workers who migrated to this island centuries ago.
MAUI ZOOLOGICAL & BOTANIC GARDENS - an entertaining and educational view of the animals and plants from many parts of the world is situated on a three-acre site in Wailuku, across from Maui War Memorial Stadium.
OHE'O STREAM (SEVEN POOLS) - truly a photographer's paradise, it is said that in these crystal pools, the mother of Maui, the demigod, used to wash and bleach her tapa-cloth.
PUAA KAA PARK - a gem of a park whose name means "the place of the rolling pigs" - dating from days gone by when plump wild pigs were said to have rolled down the slick, steep grassy hills in this area.
TEDESCHI WINERY - Hawaii's only winery. Taste its light pineapple wine, a forerunner to the production of grape wine from vineyards on the slopes of Haleakala.
WAILUA LOOKOUT - a choice view of the entire Keanae Peninsula and its spectacularly lovely coastline.
