Home Destinations Asia Japan Tokyo

The city of Tokyo is throbbing with life, day and night. It’s crowded and exciting and, except for serene garden enclosures, every square inch seems to be overflowing with new sights and sounds. For travelers who love fashion, architecture, history, electronics and shopping, Tokyo is a dream come true. With such a wealth of riches, it is difficult to choose, but here are some of our favorite Tokyo treasures.

The Imperial Palace Gardens
The Imperial Palace is the residence of the Emperor and Empress of Japan. Perhaps more inspiring than the Palace itself are the lush gardens that surround it. Especially spectacular during the springtime when the plum and cherry blossoms are in full bloom, the garden’s seasonal flowers and trees, Palace moat, lovely Niju Bridge and ancient stone wall make it worth a visit any time of year.

Shibuya
The Times Square of Tokyo, Shibuya is filled with glittering lights and day and night activity. There are movie theaters, concert halls, opera and ballet performances, museums, and countless shops and arcades that offer fashion, fast food and games. Koen-dori Street has a row of department stores and Shibuya Mark City is a huge shopping complex with a hotel, business floors and 55 shops.

Sumo Wrestling
More than enormous men grappling in a ring, Sumo is deeply ingrained in Japanese culture, mythology and identity. Matches are filled with ritual and inspire passions among fans. Tokyo’s sumo stadium is in Ryogoku and multi-day tournaments are held in January, May and September.

Odaiba
Odaiba is a large artificial island in Tokyo Bay and the newest amusement spot in Tokyo. It features a huge shopping mall with an enormous cinema and the largest “gourmet zone” in Japan, as well as the studios of Fuji TV. Venus Fort is an indoor shopping mall just for women and modeled after an 18th century European city, complete with paint-and-light sunsets every 30 minutes. Daikanransha, the world’s second largest Ferris wheel, and the Oedo-Onsen-Monogatari hot springs are here as well.

Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building
For one of the best views of Tokyo, take a ride to the observation deck of the 8i4-foot Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building, known as “Tocho.” It’s free, and the vista is breathtaking. Morning, when the air is clearest, offers the best views, including Mt. Fuji.

Edo-Tokyo Museum
Edo is the ancient name of Tokyo and the Edo-Tokyo Museum is an excellent place to get an overview of the city’s traditional and contemporary history, culture, politics and lifestyle.

Shinjuku-Gyoen National Garden
Designed 100 years ago by a French engineer, this unusual garden is built in three distinct styles: French formal, English landscape and Japanese traditional. The park is filled with flowers and wild birds, and there are more than 20,000 trees, including about 1,500 cherry trees that bloom in March and April, and a greenhouse with over 1,700 tropical and subtropical plant species on permanent display.

Sensoji Temple Asakusa
Tokyo’s oldest temple, with its magnificent “Thunder Gate,” massive paper lantern, five-story pagoda and contemplative garden has been the destination of pilgrims for centuries. Visit the temple and wander the scores of stalls that surround it, where you’ll find delicious noodles, sushi and tempura, as well as an abundance of traditional souvenirs sold to the pilgrims who return year after year.
