Fukuoka
Fukuoka is the second largest city on Japan's Kyushu Island. It is historically known for its castles and visitors can visit castle ruins as well as beautiful wooden temples. They can also taste a variety of Japanese dishes from the many food stalls and restaurants found in central Fukuoka. The city offers excellent shopping, and has a very unique shopping and entertainment complex called Canal City.
Hiroshima
Hiroshima in southwestern Honshu has grown rapidly as a commercial city, and after 1868 it was developed as a military base. Every August 6 since 1947, thousands participate in multidenominational services in the Peace Memorial Park built on the site where the bomb exploded. Visit the Peace Park but also explore Miyajima Island and its colorful shrines and mysterious forests.
Kobe
Kobe, the capital of Hyogo Prefecture, is on the southwestern Honshu Island in Osaka Bay. Behind the narrow coastal site of the city are mountains on which suburban residences and hotels have been built. Many Christian churches, Shinto and Buddhist temples and shrines, two famous statues of Buddha, a fine arts museum, and a municipal museum with a collection on Western cultural contact are in Kobe. From here you can also visit Kyoto, Nara and Sorakuen Garden.
Kyoto
In Kyoto, the past still lives on in nearly 2,000 shrines and temples, six historical preservation districts and an abundance of beautiful natural scenery. The tea ceremony and performing arts and festivals, textile, dye, ceramics, 'sake'-brewing, fans, dolls, and lacquerware industries, continue to thrive as they were passed down through generations. Kyoto's technological prowess continues to attract worldwide attention. Kyoto is also known as a center of educational and research, and it became the first city in Japan to emerge as a major convention destination. It is the ideal destination, with its history, culture, tradition, academics, technological progress, and accessibility.
Mount Fuji
Mount Fuji is the highest mountain in Japan and one of the most magnificent in the world. While you can only travel up to about halfway up the mountain by road, you will be high enough to see a magnificent panoramic view. Soaring 12,388 feet to its snow-clad peak, Mount Fuji is the majestic symbol of Japan.
Nagasaki
One of Japan's most historic cities, Nagasaki was a major port, trading with the Portuguese and Dutch in the 16th century. You can still see this colonial legacy in the brick buildings, old forts, canals and curving cobblestone streets. On a hill overlooking the bay, beautiful Glover Mansion, the setting of Madame Butterfly, is typical of the fine homes built by wealthy foreign residents. But Nagasaki's ties with Korea and China are equally apparent in the famous Chinese temple, a large Chinese colony and the numerous fine Korean and Chinese restaurants.
Okinawa
Okinawa is located southwest of mainland Japan. It consists of 161 islands and is considered an international resort destination due to its pristine beaches and warm, tropical climate. Along with its natural beauty, Okinawa is also a cultural experience giving visitors a deep appreciation for the country, culture and people. Okinawans have their own distinct culture, music, dance, cuisine, language, physical attributes, and history that set them apart from the mainland Japanese.
Osaka
This large, bustling port is the starting point for tours to the ancient cities of Kyoto and Nara, the cultural fountainheads of classical Japan. Kyoto's Old Imperial Palace and the shogunal Nijo Castle remain glorious symbols of the power the city held for over 1,000 years. Until 1868, Kyoto was the capital of Japan, filled with elegant timber buildings and, perhaps more than any other Japanese city, imbued with Kami, the divine spirit. You'll sense it everywhere, for there are hundreds of Shinto shrines and over a thousand Buddhist temples, as well as sacred treasure-houses of religious sculpture, painting and exquisite gardens. Nara, City of the Seven Great Temples, lies in an idyllic setting.
Sendai
Sendai is known nationwide as a modern city that has developed a beautiful landscape in harmony with nature. The Hirose-gawa River runs through its center and lush zelkova trees line its streets. The city center is so full of greenery, with its trees and parks, that it is called “City of Trees.” Sendai has many universities and is also well-known as an academic city with contributions to the development of the high-tech industry. In Sendai, many traditional events, including the Tanabata Matsuri Festival, continue to this day, and the Sendai International Music Competition and Street Jazz Festival are also popular artistic performances.
Tokyo
Huge department stores brim with shoppers, neon flashes from dusk to dawn, and the entire world pays heed to the slightest fluctuation on the Nikkei Index. From the Imperial Palace and Meiji Shrine to the fabled Ginza district, 20th-century Tokyo is an intriguing composite of East and West. Yuppies sporting Walkmen bow formally in greeting. Women in kimonos and Dior suits stroll side-by-side. Geishas play samisens while disc jockeys play the Top Forty.
