When you look at a continent like Asia, which covers 30% of the Earth’s land area, it is easy to see how any trip you take will only scratch the surface of this magnificent continent. Here are some of our favorite countries to visit that, while not the biggest in size, hardly lack in beauty, culture, and adventure.

Cambodia
Ancient temples, empty beaches, mighty rivers, remote forests. Cambodia has emerged from decades of war and isolation and truly back on the southeast Asian travel map. Cambodia boasts a rich culture, a weathered French-era capital and impressive natural scenery. The peace is young but the country is slowly attracting the tourism currently sweeping Vietnam.

Hong Kong
As Asia’s premier gateway to China and Southeast Asia, Hong Kong offers a great travel experience. Visitors will find everything from hiking, horse racing and sailing to internationally renowned art galleries and lively art festivals. Hong Kong is one of the world’s great cities and a delightful realm of natural wonders, serene rural villages, and a wealth of cultural attractions. Sights include the Museum of History, the Museum of Art, the Cultural Center, the city’s newest performing arts venue, and the Space Museum’s dome, where Omnimax shows and astronomy exhibits are featured. Stanley Market is an open-air market for browsing and finding bargains in fashions, leather, porcelain, and linens. Jade Market is a specialty market featuring 450 stalls with jade items.

Indonesia
The floating emerald islands of the Indonesian archipelago have for centuries lured everyone from missionaries to pirates, mining companies and backpackers to their sandalwood and spice breezes, their Bali Hai lifestyle and their magnificent beaches, mountains and volcanoes. With great improvements in communications and transport connections, Indonesia's thousands of islands and multitude of cultures still offer adventure that is hard to find in the developed world.

Korea
North Korea has some exquisite national parks, and the country is almost completely unexploited by commercial tourism. From the ultra-clean showcase capital to Paekdusan, where they're still rewriting history, there's weirdness galore. South Korea is a country swathed in green, prodding its stony fingers skyward, and filled with a people obsessed with nature, mountains in particular. South Koreans attribute their indefatigable culture to the binding agents of Confucianism, language and pride. The stunning landscape has also played a big part in creating a cohesive Korean identity.

Laos
"The Jewel of Southeast Asia". In Laos, travelers can enjoy some of Southeast Asia's most untamed natural beauty, kayak or trek in the back of beyond, experience ancient architectural wonders, enjoy the kindness and lightheartedness of Laos's unique hospitality, and experience Buddhist ritual and culture in a way that might add tranquility to your travels. The beauty of Laos exists not only along the Mekong at sunset, but in smiles at the market or impromptu Laotian lessons on the street corner, things that are easily missed if you're in a hurry.

Malaysia
Malaysia is one of the most pleasant, hassle-free countries to visit in southeast Asia. It is buoyant and wealthy, and has moved towards a pluralist culture based on a vibrant fusion of Malay, Chinese, Indian and indigenous cultures and customs. Most visitors stick to the rush of Kuala Lumpur, the colonially soothing Cameron Highlands Hill Station or the hedonistic torpor of Langkawi. However, the island of East Malaysia offers spectacular wildlife, longhouses and the awe-inspiring Mt Kinabalu. Malaysia's love of Western-style industrialization is abundantly clear in its big cities. Aside from the gleaming glass of the 21st Century, though, Malaysia boasts some of the most superb beaches, mountains and national parks in Asia.

Maldive Islands (Male)
The Maldives boast some of the finest tropical beaches in the world. The very name, Maldives, arouses visions of exotic tropical beach sun and barbeques on luxury island hotel resorts surrounded by clear calm coral reef fringed warm waters of the Indian Ocean. Visitors to the Maldives, blessed by superb underwater visibility and abundant coral life, are treated to breathtaking sights of underwater marine life. The Maldives offer the best diving spots in Asia, with some the most luxurious resorts in the Indian Ocean.

Myanmar
Myanmar sits at the crossroads of Asia’s great civilizations of India and China. It is one of Southeast Asia’s largest and most diverse countries. To this day Myanmar remains one of the most mysterious and undiscovered destinations in the world. A land of breathtaking beauty and charm, Myanmar offers the traditional delights of Asia in one fascinating country. Virgin jungles, snow-capped mountains and pristine beaches, combined with a rich and glorious heritage spanning more than two thousand years. Spectacular monuments and ancient cities attest to a vibrant culture still home to 135 different ethnic groups. Whether it be cruising down the mighty Ayeyarwaddy River in style, drifting over the ancient city of Bagan by hot air balloon, or searching for that elusive tiger on the back of an elephant, there is always a feeling of adventure, from mountain trekking and rafting in the far north to world class diving in the Mergui Archipelago.

Singapore
One of Asia's great economic successes, Singapore has fused diverse cultures into one dynamic nation. Behind high-tech industries and high-rise buildings lives a society with an ingrained sense of conservative Confucian values. Beneath the westernized modernity beats a totally Asian heart. Strong beliefs center around extended families, filial piety, discipline, respect and Asian work ethics. Singapore’s name, meaning "Lion City," can be traced to the 13th century, and today there is the mythical Merlion, half-lion, half-fish, standing guard at the mouth of the Singapore River as the symbol of Singapore.

Sri Lanka
For a small island, Sri Lanka has many nicknames: Serendib, Ceylon, Teardrop of India, Resplendent Isle, Island of Dharma, Pearl of the Orient. This colorful collection reveals its richness and beauty, and the intensity of the affection it evokes in its visitors. Head for the rolling hills to escape the heat of the plains in the cool of tea plantations. The entire island is teeming with bird life, and exotics like elephants and leopards are not uncommon. To top it all off, the people are friendly, the food is delicious and costs are low. Marco Polo considered Sri Lanka the finest island of its size in all the world, and after exploring the country's fabled delights visitors will agree. The coastal stretch south of Colombo offers palm-lined sandy expanses as far as the eye can see. Try the Kandyan dances, a procession of elephants or the masked devil dances. Find enough ancient and inspiring architecture in the cities of Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa to satisfy the inner archaeologist.

Taiwan
Taiwan is a modern industrialized megalopolis clinging to the fringes of an ancient culture; a string of teeming cities at the feet of a glorious mountain range. Step outside chaotic Taipei and discover why Taiwan is known as Ilha Formosa, 'the beautiful island'. Mountain peaks puncture a sea of clouds, slick black volcanic rock wraps the coastlines and waterfalls shroud themselves in mist.

Thailand
The kingdom of Thailand lies in the heart of Southeast Asia, making it a natural gateway to Indochina, Myanmar and Southern China. There is never a dull day in Thailand. Whether it is the Songkran Festival or the first cool breeze of winter, there is always something to make visitors smile, laugh, cry or get excited. Thailand is a land of magic and mystery that attracts the Western world and those who seek advantage and romance. Blessed with beautiful natural resources and extraordinary culture, it is no wonder Thais are such fun-loving people.

The Philippines
There are plenty of natural wonders in the Philippines - dramatic waterfalls, beautiful beaches, ancient rice terraces, hills resembling chocolate drops, reefs teeming with aquatic life. The real natural wonder of the Philippines is its outgoing people; the Bayanihan communal spirit holds Filipinos together, and they extend it to visitors as well. Travel can be risky in the southern islands and in some rural areas, but the majority of the Philippines - particularly the tourist areas - are considered safe for travelers.

Vietnam
Most visitors to Vietnam are overwhelmed by the sublime beauty of the country's natural setting: the Red River Delta in the north, the Mekong Delta in the south and almost the entire coastal strip are a patchwork of brilliant green rice paddies tended by women in conical hats. There are divine beaches along the coast, while inland there are soaring mountains, some of which are cloaked by dense, misty forests. Vietnam also offers an opportunity to see a country of traditional charm and rare beauty rapidly opening up to the outside world.
