Tips for Avoiding Seasickness While Cruising

A cruise should be your time to relax and enjoy a vacation free of worries. However, some people are wary of taking a cruise, or an extended cruise, due to the affects of sea sicknesses, or ‘mal de mer’ as the French say. The following are some helpful tips from All-Travel's experienced Travel Consultants to help prevent potential seasickness.

If you’re prone to motion sickness, we recommend you book a cruise on a larger ship. This will minimize the rocking motion and make you feel more comfortable when spending time on the boat. Onboard your cruise ship, make sure to book an oceanview or balcony stateroom. A tight, enclosed room may make you feel claustrophobic and nauseous. A window will enable you to look out at the horizon should your stomach feel unsettled and will help to calm your nerves.

Shorter cruises may be a better option for those who tend to get queasy on the high seas. A three-day cruise with less time at sea, and more time at port, might make for a more enjoyable trip. There are simple ways to avoid seasickness once onboard. Consider wearing sea-bands, a wristband which works like acupressure. The wristband has a button on the inside which is positioned to press a specific pressure point on the inside of the wrist to soothe nausea.

If you need treatment, the ship’s gift shops, the purser’s desk, or the infirmary all carry such drugs as sea-bands, Dramamine, and Bonine. A refreshing stroll around the ship’s spacious deck can also act as an instant cure.
