Tips for Travelling to Mexico

Traveling to Mexico can be both fun an enjoyable whether on your honeymoon or with your family. Minors traveling with adults other than their parents may be required to submit further documentation. There are a few other travel tips we’ve put together to make your vacation to Mexico safe and enjoyable:
  • Travelers from the United States or Canada to Mexico need a valid passport from their country – no longer are just a birth certificate and a driver’s license adequate documentation for entry.
  • While gambling has only recently become legal Mexico casinos are not widespread.
  • Electricity in Mexico runs on 110 volts, which is the same as the US. No need to bring any voltage converters on your trip to Mexico. However, some older hotels may not have grounded outlets – bring an adapter.

Drinking Water in Mexico
Generally, drinking the purified water from most hotels and restaurants in Mexico is perfectly safe. However, bottled drinking water is readily available and inexpensive at smaller stores throughout the major cities.

Car Rental and Transportation Information
Buses run throughout Mexico and can take you to and from just about anywhere relatively inexpensively.

Taxis are easily found, but we advise that you agree on the fare before you enter the cab. Be wary of the “tourist taxis” that promise more luxury – these can be twice as expensive as the standard blue and white Volkswagen Bugs. Generally, fares are about 20 pesos for most trips, but this cost does rise at night. Taxi drivers rarely receive tips, but are thankful when they do.

Money
Mexico’s unit of currency is the peso. Currently, visitors from the US can get about 10 pesos to the dollar, making Mexico a terrific vacation destination. ATMs are located at banks and major tourist spots in and around the country. They do charge a small fee of $3 to $5, but do offer good exchange rates. While merchants will accept American currency, we recommend that you deal in pesos to get a better bargain for your buck.

Tipping
It is generally good practice when vacationing in Mexico to tip from 10% to 12%. For better service and many of the major cities’ nightclubs, tip closer to 20%.
