A Brief History of Huatulco

Though they never completely conquered the region, when the Aztec people first arrived to what is present day Huatulco, they named the city "Cuahtolco" or "place of wood worshipping". This could perhaps tie into a famous legend that brought Saint Thomas, the apostle of Christ to the beach of Huatulco with a large piece of what is believed to be the Holy Cross. The native peoples to this region include a mix of Mayan and Zapotecan, with the Mixtec influences later showing dominance to culture.

During the conquest of the Spanish, Huatulco served as the first major port between New Spain and Peru for about 20 years from 1540 to 1560. Horribly ravaged by pirates, like Francis Drake and Thomas Cavendish the port was officially moved to Acapulco and destroyed by official order in 1616.

As with most popular Mexican coastal towns, Huatulco remained a quiet little fishing village for many of the years that followed. That is, until the late 1960s when the Mexican government took on an ambitious new policy for attracting tourism. The plan called for turning beach sites into world-class resorts.

Huatulco would become the first "ecotourism" resort with the finishing of the major highways to the 35 kilometers of nine natural bays that make up the resort development. With the establishment of a direct flight to Huatulco from Manchester Airport in the UK in 2006, tourism to the region – especially British tourists.

A few of our favorites include La Bocana, Bahias Conejos, Tangolunda, Playa Arrocito, and Bahia de Santa Cruz – the beach where pirate Sir Francis Drake tried to destroy the Holy Cross, but was unsuccessful.

Snorkeling & Scuba Diving

Because of the bay setting at most of Huatulco’s beaches, the waters are calm and ideal for snorkeling. Five of the region’s nine bays have been designated as part of a National Aquatic Park in an attempt to preserve the flora and fauna of the region. Today, the bays of Huatulco contain about 15 different sites ideal for diving or snorkeling. Though the coral reefs may not be quite as colorful as in the Caribbean, the diversity of marine life is breathtaking. For diving or snorkeling, we recommend these areas: Risco La Blanca, El Naufragio and San Augustín for diving along with Isla Cacaluta, Playa El Indio, and Chachacual for snorkeling.
