Apple Vacations to Cancun
Cancun is one of Apple Vacations’ featured travel destinations. With all inclusive vacation packages starting from over 280 departure cities in the United States, Apple Vacations is the premiere Cancun vacation provider. Travel to Cancun has been growing in popularity since the first efforts to develop the city began in 1970. Today, Cancun features a thriving metropolis full of world class restaurants and shopping malls, quaint flea markets, ancient Mayan ruins located in remote tropical rainforests, and some of the beautiful coral reef formed beaches nestled along the Caribbean Sea. Considered to contain both a “mainland” district and outlying “island” surrounding beautiful lagoons, Cancun is rich in cultural heritage and adventure. The narrow island-like strip of land forms what is popularly known as Cancun’s Hotel Zone and features about 140 different hotels.
The weather in Cancun is always warm and inviting, hovering between about 78 and 98 depending upon the season. Rainfall in this tropical climate is frequent and highly variable, but does make for lush rainforests, sun showers and frequent rainbows.
A Brief History of Cancun
Cancun began as a smaller island-town on the eastern coast of the Yucatan Peninsula in southern Mexico. In the 1950s, the Mexican government realized the potential for the area to become a major resort and travel destination. Development began in 1970 with the Mexican government financing the building of the first 8 hotels along the narrow strip of land that separates the Nichupte Lagoon from the Caribbean Sea. The success of these first ventures attracted investors that helped turn Cancun into the thriving resort community we see today.
Cancun Points of Interest
The more than 600,000 permanent residents of Cancun are proud of the city’s ancient Mayan heritage. Tours to many of the nearby ancient cities, like Chichen Itza, Tulum, El Rey, Coba, Xcaret, and Xel-Ha are readily available. The older districts of the mainland city also offer quaint neighborhoods ideal for an afternoon stroll.
Nearly 750 miles of the Great Maya Reef lies just off the Cancun shore in the Caribbean Sea. The region is also home to a number of underground rivers. These combine for fantastic scuba diving or snorkeling adventures.
Cancun is also home to some of most beautiful beaches in the world. The white powder-like beaches of the Rivera Maya were formed from the nearby coral reefs that produce the beautiful sand. Visitors can often be found lying on the beach and swimming, parasailing, or jet skiing in the warm waters of the Caribbean, and the Nichupte Lagoon.
Just 13 km off the shore of Cancun lies the ancient Isla Mujeres, or “Island of Women”. The ancient Mayans considered the sacred island dedicated to the Moon Goddess, Ix-Chel. When Spanish explorers landed on the island in the 16th century, they were confronted with thousands of images of Ix-Chel and gave the island its current name. Today, the island features some of the popular ecological sites of the area including the Garrafon Marine Park and wild bird sanctuary.

Cancun Time Zone and Weather
The time zone in Cancun is the same as Central Time in the
United States. Typical for it's tropical region, the weather in
Cancun is warm all year. Sea breezes sometimes temper the summer heat, but the humidity grows as you move further away from the water. The beaches are warm enough for swimming all year. The hurricane season typically runs from August through October - allowing the greatest chance for a disruption of your vacation. If traveling to
Cancun during this time, we suggest purchasing
travel insurance in the event weather disrupts your vacation. While most visitors to
Cancun wear shorts and comfortable shirts during most of the year, we suggest nicer resort wear for some of the more upscale restaurants. When traveling it winter we also recommend bringing a sweater or light jacket for cooler evenings and air conditioned buildings.
