Vacations to Cabo San Lucas

On the southern tip of Baja, where the waters of the Gulf of California mix with the might Pacific Ocean, lies the Mexican resort city of Cabo San Lucas. Though filled with fabulous luxury resorts and a myriad of activities, the mood in Cabo is still slow, easy, and relaxing.

A Brief History of Cabo San Lucas

When the Spanish explorer Hernan Cortez first arrived in the area now known as Cabo San Lucas in 1537, they found a small, isolated town of nomadic groups of Pericú Indians. Surrounded by oceans on one side and desert on the other, the area became a popular hideout for pirates.

The first permanent settlers did not populate Cabo until the early 20th Century. Shipwrecked Japanese sailor, Hatsutaro reported that when he arrived in Cabo San Lucas in May of 1842, he found only two houses and about 20 people.

In 1917 an unnamed American company realized the potential of the spot for commercial fishing. A floating platform was built and Cabo was well on its way to becoming a fishing village – with the help of newly founded Compañía de Productos Marinos, S.A..

After World War II, the area’s propensity for excellent deep sea fishing drew celebrities and rich American Tourists, forced to travel by private plane or yacht as there were no roads leading to Cabo San Lucas from Mexican airports. By the mid to late 1950’s hotels were built to attract more tourism – visitors like Bing Crosby, Phil Harris, Desi Arnaz, and John Wayne were known to take frequent vacations to Cabo.

In 1974, the Mexico Highway 1 stretched down to the southern tip of the Baja California peninsula and made travel to Cabo San Lucas finally easy. Mexico’s best kept secret hideway was now open for business and business started booming. The 1986 building of San Jose del Cabo International Airport brought explosive growth and contributed to the formation of what is now a premiere Apple Vacation Destination.
