Apple Vacations to Acapulco

A Brief History of Acapulco

The original inhabitants of the region of Mexico that now features Acapulco were precursors to the Aztecs known as the Nahuas. It is believed that the Nahuas originated in the Southwest United States and migrated to central Mexico in around 2000 BCE. Francisco Chico arrived in Acapulco from Spain in 1521 and promptly named the city Santa Lucia. The Acapulco bay served as a ship building yard. This came in quite handy as the Spanish set up Acapulco as the only “authorized” trading post between Asia and the Americas by 1599.

With trade came rampant piracy, Sir Francis Drake, Sir Thomas Cavendish, and Sir Henry Morgan being among the most infamous. Their antics in the region forced the Spanish to commission the now famous Fuerte de San Diego (Fort of San Diego) in 1615. The original fort survived until an earthquake in 1776, but was rebuilt in 1783.

The Mexican War of Independence in 1810 destroyed almost all of Acapulco, slowly transforming the city into a sleepy little fishing village. European travelers began visiting Acapulco as vacation destination in the 1920s. Thanks to a newly built highway from Mexico City to Acapulco in 1955, the town was well on its way to earning its reputation as a party town – a favorite destination for famous Hollywood stars. During the 1960s and 1970s, efforts to create more affordable vacation accommodations in Acapulco helped transform this exclusive city into the bustling resort town we find today.

Acapulco Points of Interest

While the vast majority of travelers to Acapulco come to relax on its beautiful beaches or play in the warm waters, there are several points of interest to check out. The most famous is the La Quebrada Cliff Divers. Since 1934, young men have said a short prayer at a shrine on top of the cliff and then tried to prove their bravery with death-defying dives from the perilous and jagged cliffs. From a height of as much as 136 feet, the divers must time the tide just so to avoid hitting the rocks below. We recommend that you tip the divers generously as they are not paid well.

Travelers to Acapulco can also take a glass bottom boat to the Isla de la Roqueta. This small island off the coast of Acapulco features calm waters and fine sand. Eat in one of the island's three restaurants or visit the zoo on top of the hill.

The Zocalo in Acapulco is the main plaza within the city. Especially busy on Sundays, the Zocalo serves as a place to stroll through some of the original city's remaining buildings to flea markets, shops, cafes and more. The Acapulco Garden Club has landscaped the Zocalo quite beautifully.

Competing with Cancun and Puerto Vallarta, Acapulco features some of the most beautiful beaches in the world. This port is a favorite stop for Mexican Cruises originating from Los Angeles. It's no wonder that most travelers come to Acapulco to relax and let their troubles melt away into the sand.
